the answer
In 1947 Hungarian electrical engineer Dennis Gabor developed his theory of holographic information storage while working in England to improve the electron microscope. It was Gabor who coined the words "hologram" and "holography" to describe his discovery, combining the Greek words holos (whole, entire) and gramma (anything written or drawn). The term holography refers to the information storage process itself.
Gabor received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention and development of the holographic method. You can find out more about holograms at the Holography Virtual Gallery.
