Barry Shell answered on March 6, 2004, A:

A simple google search (www.google.com) for polyvinylpyrrolidone safety yielded a 2002 paper from the European Commission on PVP. While the stuff is bad for you if you eat enough of it, you'd have to eat about 100,000 times the amount that is used for medical purposes before it would likely cause any harm. It's metabolized quickly by stomach acids and appears to be pretty safe.
