Barry Shell answered on September 6, 2006, A:

According to Ethnologue, there are 6,912 living languages in the world. Of those, 2,261 have writing systems. The rest are only spoken. The vast majority of different languages are concentrated in tropical countries or in countries with large populations such as India. You can learn about the world's languages at Ethnologue's language index.
