Physicist; among the first to study X-rays

The Story

b. 1874

After studying at such prestigious schools as the University of Berlin, Germany and Cambridge, England, Laird received her PhD from the University of Toronto, Ontario in 1927. For 36 years, Laird served as the head of the physics department at Mount Holyoke University, Massachusetts. During this time she studied the properties of “soft” X-rays which occur in the electromagnetic spectrum between known x-rays and the extreme ultraviolet.
