Developed mathematical theories of group representations and number theory
Langlands studied at UBC in Vancouver, BC (BA, 1957; MA, 1958) and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (PhD 1960) and has received several honorary degrees. He is known for his work in group representations and number theory which involves mathematical symmetries and conjectures about pure number such as “every number above the number 4 can be expressed as the sum of two primes” (though this is not Langland’s area). He has received many awards including the Commonwealth Award, the Cole Prize, the National Sciences Academy Award in Mathematics, the Wolf Prize (1996) and he is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
