Though she worked in relative obscurity and ended up in an unmarked grave in the Park Lawn cemetery in Toronto, Farrell played a key role in the eradication of polio. She did not discover the vaccine, but she figured out a way to stimulate the growth of microorganisms in the lab, and this technique was eventually used to mass produce the Salk polio vaccine.
